We are committed to ensuring that every adoptable pet we take in remains in our foster care until a suitable permanent home is found. Our goal is to find the perfect match for each animal and adopter, fostering lifelong bonds.

Every animal is different. If NASAP knows if an animal is good or bad with children, we will include that in the write-up on the website. However, please talk to the foster home about the animal, as they are best able to provide information on the animal.

Dogs and cats are spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

All NASAP animals are microchipped prior to adoption and we highly recommend you keep microchip information readily available and up to date in case of an emergency. We use EIDAP microchips that are easy to keep up to date!
It could save a great deal of heartache should the animal become lost.

We occasionally tattoo animals once spayed or neutered.

yes! cats receive FRCP vaccines and dogs receive DTAPP. All animals receive rabies once they are proper age (4 months or older) prior to adoption. All animals receive deworming.

No. Included in the adoption contract is a clause specifying that no operations such as those specified above can be performed on the animal after being adopted. Operations such as declawing, tail docking and ear cropping are extremely painful operations for the animal and in the vast majority of cases do not have a functional reason.

All animals are spayed or neutered before adoption – no exceptions.

We occasionally do get animals that are purebred and have a birth certificate and pedigree, but the vast majority do not. This is because a lot of the animals we have are rescued from pounds or found as strays.

At NASAP, euthanasia is only used when absolutely necessary, typically in cases of serious injury, grave illness, or severe behavioral issues that pose a threat to human safety. This decision is made in consultation with the Board of Directors and the participating veterinarian to ensure it is the last and only option.

Life circumstances can change, leading people to the tough decision of surrendering a beloved pet. NASAP attempts to help these individuals by finding new, loving homes for their pets when we have foster home space available. This support is crucial in preventing more animals from becoming homeless.

There are two ways to meet our animals:

If you see an animal listed on our website and you would like to meet them:

1) You can Contact Us or click the “Adopt Me” link on the animal’s profile, and fill out the online questionnaire as thoroughly as possible. Then submit the questionnaire. A volunteer will pass along your contact information to the animal’s foster home. The foster home will then contact you and will arrange with you a time to come and visit the animal.

2) The other way to visit an animal is to attend one of our Events. Please see our Events page for the dates and locations where events will be happening. Contact Us to find out which animals will be at these Events

Typical course for fostering a dog is 3-5 months while cats are typically 3-12 months. This allows time for the animal to decompress, receive full medical care, recover from surgery and screen adopters. All animals get homes in the end!

It is of course in the animal’s interest to stay in the one foster home until it is adopted to a permanent home.

Not necessarily. Our foster homes are volunteers who work very hard to try to match the animal they have taken responsibility for to a family that most suits the needs of that animal. Many animals generate a number of inquiries and a home is chosen based on what NASAP believes to be best for that particular animal. Please understand that this does not mean that you would not provide a proper home but that the animal is placed based on what our team believe to be most suitable.

If your adoption request is turned down, we encourage you to continue to watch our website and apply for a different animal. NASAP reserves the right to refuse any adoption request for reasons to be kept private and confidential within the administration of the organization.

We rarely know for sure the exact breed of the animal. We make a visual assessment when we rescue the animal, and based on that try and determine the breed(s). Many of our volunteers have been assessing animals for years, and are very proficient at it.

We rarely know for sure the exact age of the animal. Frequently we rely on a veterinarian’s estimate of the age of the animal, which they do primarily by examining the teeth. However, we cannot make a guarantee.

No. The adoption fee is not refundable but the animal is always returnable. We ask that NASAP be the first call if the adoption is not working out

• Every animal in our care receives necessary medical treatments, which include vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and any other required medical attention.
• Beyond physical health, we ensure that behavioral training is part of their foster care. This helps identify any fears or behavioral traits that potential adopters should be aware of.
• NASAP is working to be Force Free Certified and uses Force Free training methods

NASAP leases a small commercial space for storage. We believe that animals thrive in a loving, home-based environment rather than in kennels. This approach reduces stress and allows each animal to receive individualized care and attention.

We prioritize networking with major local pounds once cats or dogs have been declared abandoned. These animals are found as strays in the community and are at risk of being euthanized if not claimed. We intake as many animals as we can into loving foster homes and for those we do not have space for, we work with our partner pound to spay and neuter and vaccinate the animals for the safety of the kennel and help them find different rescue placements. This support is crucial in preventing more animals from becoming homeless.

We understand that not every adoption works out. In these cases, we encourage the return of the animal to NASAP’s foster care. This policy ensures that animals continue to receive the care they need while we search for a more suitable home.

• Our foster homes are more than just temporary shelters; they are nurturing spaces where animals are treated as part of the family. This setup allows pets to learn and practice basic house manners, making them well-prepared for their future homes.
• Foster caregivers provide crucial training and socialization. Whether it’s learning to interact with children and other pets or adapting to urban or rural living, our foster network is equipped to handle these needs.
• Foster homes are crucial to assessing and picking the adoptive home for their foster animal

We accept cash or EFT. This is given to the foster home at the time of adoption.

We have vacation foster homes, pet sitters and kennels that are available for vacation or emergencies. We are completely volunteer run and encourage at least 2 weeks notice about vacations or to have an animal relocated.

Foster homes always have the option to adopt their foster animal. We know the dog/cat will have a wonderful home and hopefully you may even feel comfortable to continue to foster for us. If not, then it is the best way to lose a foster home!

In the case where we have received multiple inquiries on a single animal, we will pass the contact information for all of the people interested to the foster home. The foster home will then contact these people, and try and find the best possible fit for the animal. We never adopt first come, first serve; it is always best fit!

NASAP realizes that there are going to be some cases where an animal just does not fit into a household. If this does happen, please contact us. We will do our best to try and help resolve the issues and will talk about potential solutions to the problem.

NASAP requires potential adopters have their animals meet any potential adoptive animals. Our foster home and intake members will help facilitate these meetings. This helps to make sure that all of the animals will get along BEFORE the adoption takes place. When you make arrangements with the foster home, please talk to them about bringing your animals.

NASAP cannot be responsible for any damage done to your property.

NASAP will provide all needed supplies for foster homes. We strongly recommend that the dog is kennelled when the family is away.

Some of the dogs you will be asked to foster will be housetrained, some may not be or if they are they may forget their training in the stress of all that has happened to them. A few accidents in the home should not come as a surprise – there are very good products now on the market which clean up dog soilage and absorb the smell.

Cats will be provided with cat trees and enrichment toys to deter damage to furniture. Litter boxes and litter will be provided to ensure proper hygeine and training will be provided to limit damage to your home.

When dogs and cats come into NASAP’s care they are screened for behavior and temperment. We screen all foster homes to ensure we place the proper animal with the proper home. We ask foster homes to allow all fosters space to decompress with the rule of 3.

NASAP fosters are either strays from our partner pounds or surrendered animals. We have trainers who will assist with specific behaviour concerns. If things are really not going well then we will always remove that animal from the foster home and find it another place more suitable.

NASAP does not have a central location, or even a kennel. Instead our foster homes take our animals into their homes. They make the animal a part of the family. This way we get to know the animal and their personality, making it easier to find the right permanent home for them.

Our foster homes and intake team choose the home that they feel is the best match for the animal, and that decision will be supported by the NASAP Board.

Along with donations, NASAP uses the adoption fees to provide medical attention, food and shelter to homeless, abused or unwanted animals. NASAP’s largest expenses are for medical bills, which include emergency procedures, medications and spay/neuter procedures.

The following services are included in each adoption fee:

Spaying or Neutering

All NASAP cats and dogs are spayed or neutered before they are adopted into new homes.

• Feline Neuter- $70 – $150
• Feline Spay- $120 – $200
• Canine Neuter- $205 – $260 (depending on weight)
• Canine Spay- $260 – $330 (depending on weight)

Vaccinations

All NASAP cats and kittens are vaccinated before adoption with 3-way vaccine (Feline Rhinotracheitis-Calici-Panleukopenia Vaccine). Dogs and puppies are vaccinated with Canine Distemper-Adenovirus type 2-Parainfluenza-Parvovirus Vaccine. If kittens or puppies are still in care when the booster is required, it is also included in the adoption fee. All animals are vaccinated for rabies once possible.

If they are adopted before the booster is due, it is the responsibility of the new owner.

• Cat/Kitten Vaccine (single): Approximately $55
• Dog/Puppy Vaccine (single): Approximately $55

Treatment for Parasites

All NASAP cats/kittens and dogs/puppies receive a dose of dewormer and (if necessary) Revolution before adoption to ensure they are parasite free.

• Dewormer: Approximately $15
• Revolution: Approximately $45

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus/Feline Leukemia Testing

All NASAP cats and kittens are tested for the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) before adoption.

Retail cost at a selection of Edmonton Veterinarians:

• FIV/FeLV test: $70 – $120

Post-Adoption Vet Checkup

At the time of adoption, the adoptive parents of NASAP cats/kittens and dogs/puppies are provided with a coupon for a post-adoption health checkup at a partner veterinary clinic. Please note that this visit must be booked within ten days of the adoption.

Additional Veterinary Care

Some animals come into NASAP’s care perfectly healthy, but many others are in need of immediate additional veterinary care to return them to a happy and healthy state. These procedures often include dentistry and/or tooth extractions, bloodwork, urinalyses, complete shaves (due to fur matting) and nail trimming. These additional procedures are all performed prior to adoption at NASAP’s expense.

ALL of these services are included in the NASAP cat ($180), kitten ($200), dog ($350) and puppy ($450) adoption fees. Compare that to the total market value of care that your new NASAP animal has received and it is obvious that our adoption fees are not only reasonable, but an excellent deal!

We will provide all the necessary food and equipment (ie:harness, leash, bowls, collar, beds, crates, toys, etc) and NASAP pays for any medical expenses through our partner vets.
You should not be out of pocket if you foster an animal for NASAP.

We are able to provide tax receipts for any donations made toward your foster animals.

Travel will be required as a foster home; for vet appointments with our partners veterinarians, to bring the animal to events happening around Edmonton and area, and to home checks to support intake team with screening potential adopters at their home.

It is always helpful to us and the animal if our foster homes can transport their animals independently but we occasionally have volunteers who are able to help if needed.
